Boerne was named for Ludwig Borne, a Jewish German author and publicist. The city was settled by those who came here as a result of the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. They were organized by the Adelsverein or Noblemen’s Society that sent hundreds of immigrants to settle in this area of Texas. In addition, the high school has an excellent athletic department and the Boerne Greyhounds have won several state championships in various sports.

Boerne is the location for the Omega Retreat, which is a Christian retreat for people of all faiths. The Health and Wholeness Center is a senior citizen-oriented place for seniors to socialize and classes in arts and crafts and water aerobics are offered. Hilltop Treasures Books and Gifts is located next door to the center. The area is known for the nature trails provided for those who want to experience the beauty of the area. Horseback riding is enjoyed as many residents of Boerne own horses. Golfing may be enjoyed in Cordillera Ranch, which is located nearby. This is a diverse area that is chosen as home by many from retirees to those looking for a small town to raise a family.
